Environmental Graphic Design Placemaking Master Signage ProgramsMixed-use environmental graphic design supports a variety of needs, which may be commercial, residential, cultural, or institutional, within a shared building, workplace, neighborhood, block, or district. Through mixed-use signage and wayfinding design, we create sustainable, walkable communities that create meaningful and enjoyable connections between people and the built environment.
Mixed-Use Environmental Graphic Design That Creates Memorable Destinations
To achieve a balance of commercial viability, aesthetic beauty, and functional needs, RSM Design applies a principle-centered design approach that begins with the end in mind. By understanding what success looks like for the client, collaborators, community, and environment, we can develop a process that leads to these results. We prioritize thorough research and collaboration between all consultants and stakeholders. A unique identity and sense of security throughout the overall user experience differentiates our projects from other mixed-use designs.
Mixed-use developments have a variety of uses and audiences, so the primary goal of RSM Design is understanding and unifying the needs of the local community, our client, their stakeholders, and the built environment. Within a single building, we help retail shops attract customers while maintaining an intimate home for residents in and condominiums or apartments above. Meanwhile, large-scale mixed-use projects like 5th & Broadway in Nashville become urban villages that require a clear master sign program along with unique moments of graphic placemaking or murals.
Retail, office, and residential developments provide creative opportunities to elevate mixed-use building design from a static brand identity to a community that thrives and takes the space as their own. Our work carefully combines diverse functions through solutions that are sustainable, efficient, and community centered.

Mixed-Use Design Strategies
Mixed-Use Wayfinding
In mixed-use design for buildings and public spaces, we view wayfinding as an orchestrated system of experiences that work together to guide users naturally through complex environments. Our approach to mixed-use wayfinding integrates architecture, landscape, art, signage, and lighting to create intuitive pathways that help visitors navigate confidently between retail, residential, office, and public spaces. By studying traffic patterns and key decision points, we determine optimal locations for visual cues that enhance the user journey.
Mixed-Use Signage & Master Programs
Our master sign programs lay the foundation for clear, cohesive communication across mixed-use development signs. We analyze how people move through the built environment in order to create comprehensive guidelines that unite diverse uses, from retail and entertainment to residential and office. Throughout each master program, our mixed-use signage design considers the space’s current needs while building flexibility for future growth. Through strategic implementation at both vehicular and pedestrian scales, we ensure visitors reach their destinations with confidence.
Mixed-Use Environmental Graphic Design
Environmental graphic design in mixed-use spaces requires a deep understanding of how different user groups interact with their surroundings. RSM Design crafts visual narratives that reinforce brand identity while creating distinct personalities for each district. Our solutions combine creativity and functionality, using typography, color, and art to shape expressive built environments that communicate purpose and guide movement. Each element contributes to a layered experience that resonates with the local community.
Mixed-Use Graphic Architecture
RSM Design bridges the gap between architectural form and visual communication. By collaborating closely with architects and stakeholders, we integrate graphic elements that complement and strengthen the built environment. Our work in mixed-use architecture design extends beyond surface treatments to become an integral part of the overall experience. Through careful consideration of materials, scale, and sight lines, we create visual connections that strengthen the dialogue between people and place.
Mixed-Use Branded Environments
For mixed-use developments, we create branding that captures the authentic spirit of a place while establishing clear connections between its diverse components. Our process begins with understanding the unique character, history, and culture of the location. We then translate these insights into visual identities that extend naturally into three-dimensional space. The result is a holistic branded environment that carries a consistent narrative throughout the user experience.
Mixed-Use Placemaking
Our placemaking strategy transforms mixed-use environments into vibrant community destinations. We focus on creating public spaces that encourage interaction, strengthen social bonds, and share the story of the place. By incorporating public art, wayfinding elements, and thoughtful mixed-use building design features, we craft environments that invite discovery and engagement. Each space is designed to enhance the community beyond its immediate needs, generating a sense of belonging that endures.
Types of Mixed-Use Development Signs
Mixed-Use Entry Signage
The first touchpoint in the user journey must create an impactful arrival experience. We design entry monuments, signage, and gateway elements that establish the mixed-use development's character while guiding visitors naturally into the space. Through careful material selection and strategic placement, these elements become iconic landmarks that welcome guests and set the tone for their experience.
Directional Signage & Maps
Navigation through mixed-use spaces requires thoughtful guidance at key decision points. RSM Design develops comprehensive mixed-use wayfinding systems that incorporate directional signs, maps, and location markers. By studying traffic patterns and user needs, we place these elements strategically to guide movement while maintaining visual harmony within the built environment.
Mixed-Use Architectural Design
RSM Design views mixed-use architecture design as an integral part of the wayfinding experience. By collaborating with architects early in the design process, we identify opportunities to integrate signage and graphics naturally into the built environment. The result merges form and function, creating intuitive navigation cues through the architectural elements themselves.
Identification Signage
Clear, consistent identification helps visitors orient themselves with confidence. Our approach integrates building markers, tenant identification, district identifiers, and more that reflect the project's visual language while maintaining clarity. Each element works within a unified mixed-use wayfinding system, creating recognition points that build familiarity and comfort throughout the built environment.
Mixed-Use Signage Accessibility
Universal design principles guide our approach to accessibility. We integrate ADA requirements naturally into mixed-use signage design, ensuring all users can navigate the space with independence and dignity. Our solutions consider factors like text height, contrast ratios, and placement to create truly inclusive built environments.
Public Art & Murals
Art adds soul and character in mixed-use environmental graphic design. We curate and commission public art that tells stories, builds connections, and provides natural wayfinding landmarks. These installations become focal points that encourage interaction and photography while subtly guiding movement through the space.
Each element in our mixed-use design solutions serves a greater purpose—from practical navigation to cultural celebration—creating built environments that bring communities together.
