Architecture speaks of space, form, place, and function, while integrated architectural graphic design communicates a building’s function, purpose, message, and narrative. Effective and appropriate architecture graphics support the statement made by a building and strengthen its presence.
Architecture Graphics & Signage Design as a Bridge
The architectural graphics layered into the conversation derive from the built context, spatial context, cultural context, and historical context. They are neither independent nor superficial. The architecture graphic design layer has meaning, form, function, and purpose—similar to the architecture itself.
Architectural signage and wayfinding are critical components of how graphic design and architecture can work together to create a strong sense of place, fulfill human needs, help users find their way, and communicate a building’s narrative. By seamlessly integrating these architectural graphics into the built environment, RSM Design fosters a strong connection between people and place.

Key Components of Architectural Graphics
Architectural Wayfinding
At RSM Design, we approach wayfinding as more than just signage. Architectural wayfinding is a set of experiences working together to help users orient themselves and navigate to specific destinations. We elevate their journey by introducing opportunities to learn, discover, gather, share, and connect along the way. To accomplish this, our design progress begins with significant research into the people who use the space, how they move through it, and what their needs are. We study traffic patterns and decision points using key design strategies that determine optimal locations for custom architectural signage and graphics. Following this discovery phase, we design a visual kit of parts that maintains the brand voice while meeting user needs.
Strategic Analysis of Signage and Wayfinding
When there is an existing signage program in the built environment, we take a Principle-Centered Design approach to analyze how users currently interact with the space. In addition to identifying pain points and decision moments where existing signage succeeds or falls short, we provide thorough documentation and evaluation of signs’ current conditions to help inform our architectural signage design. Regarding budget, we develop detailed cost estimates based on materials, fabrication methods, installation complexity, and program scope. We present clients with options at various price points, clearly outlining the benefits and limitations of each. This transparency allows for informed decisions that maximize value while meeting project goals and constraints.
Architectural Signage Design
Architecture speaks through form and space, while architectural signage translates function and purpose for users. We craft signage solutions that become integral parts of the built environment, not mere afterthoughts applied to surfaces. Materials, proportion, and placement work together to create a visual language that complements the architectural vision. Our team studies sight lines, lighting conditions, user pathways, and more to position each architectural graphic for maximum effectiveness without disrupting the overall aesthetic. Through this thoughtful integration, our architecture signage becomes part of the building's voice, guiding and informing users while respecting the integrity of the space.
Branded Environments & Visual Identities
RSM Design creates brands that reflect the spirit, authenticity, and culture of a place and the people who make it whole. What sets us apart is our ability to transition from logo development into fully branded physical environments. Going beyond the two-dimensional realm, we design layered architectural graphic design experiences that enact the brand vision. Our studio works through a holistic lens to produce consistent visual identities and living branded environments that support how people connect with places. Through careful integration of brand elements—from architectural signage and environmental graphics to materials and spatial experiences—we craft built environments where users engage with place.
Custom Architectural Signage
Architectural Wayfinding Signage
Our architectural wayfinding signage blends form with function. We design these critical navigational elements based on careful analysis of user pathways, decision points, and architectural features. The most successful wayfinding signage feels like a natural extension of the architecture, reinforcing the building's identity while providing clear directional guidance. By considering factors like viewing distances, lighting conditions, and material relationships, RSM Design creates intuitive architectural graphics that help users move with confidence.
Architectural Building Signage
Building signage often establishes the first connection between architecture and its audience. We study sight lines, approach sequences, and architectural materials to determine optimal placement and scale for signs. This includes a variety of architectural building signage, such as identification signs, directional signs, and informational signs, both interior and exterior. Our approach to signage balances visibility with architectural harmony, enhancing rather than competing with the building. Typography, materiality, and fabrication methods are selected to complement the building's character while projecting a clear identity that functions effectively in all conditions.
Monument Architectural Signage Design
Monument signage anchors a sense of arrival for users. It also establishes their first physical connection to a place's identity. Our monument designs grow from the site context, considering landscape, architecture, and viewing conditions from multiple approach paths. Materials are selected for durability, maintenance requirements, and harmony with landscape, graphic design, and architecture alike. Through thoughtful integration of typography, materials, and landscape, our monumentation creates memorable first impressions that last.
Digital Signage & Kiosks
Digital signage and kiosks bring flexibility and interaction to built environments. Our approach integrates these technological elements with architectural character through carefully designed housings and thoughtful placements. Content strategy is as important as physical design, with clear hierarchies and user pathways guiding the digital experience. We consider factors like ambient light, viewing angles, and accessibility to ensure digital information is available to all users. RSM Design collaborates with technology partners to ensure digital components integrate smoothly within both the built environment and technical operations.
Donor Recognition Walls
RSM Design produces donor walls with a visual language that communicates contribution hierarchies and maintains design integrity. Selected materials complement the architecture while offering longevity and flexibility as new donors are added. Meanwhile, the typography and layout establish clear organization in addition to creating visually compelling compositions. The best donor walls become destinations in themselves—places where stories of generosity inspire others and add richness to the architectural experience.
Beginning with the end in mind, we help clients envision comprehensive architectural graphic design systems that can evolve over time while maintaining design integrity.
